Toensing and the Minnesota Legislative Manuals, 1921-1925 and 1939-1941 list his last name as Herreid. The Minnesota Legislative Manual, 1919 lists Herried.

He moved with his parents to North Branch, Minnesota before going to college. He moved to Deer River, Minnesota in 1908.

He was a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Deer River, Scottish Rite, Shrine, and Jesters of Duluth. He was a charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star of Deer River. He was the Grand Patron for the Grand Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star of Minnesota from 1926-1927.
